The penguin one of seven African penguins recently arrived at the aquarium and his buddies were all part of a month-long naming contest.

Entrants were asked to think of B.C. places for names and more than 600 entries poured in.

Richmondite Winnie Kwok stayed loyal to her hometown and offered up a poem, song and video dedicated to why one of the penguins should be called Steveston.

Kwok was selected by the judges for her witty video entry and original song composition about Steveston the Penguin.

Winnies written rationale also eloquently highlighted why she loves the beautiful village of Steveston with its vibrant community, past and present.

All the winners received a yearlong family membership to the aquarium and a VIP penguin experience.

The other penguins were named: Lillooet, Tofino, Hope, Nelson, Sechelt and Salt Spring.

The aquariums general manager, Clint Wright, said the facility is always looking for ways to ways to engage with our visitors.

The panel of judges chose names that resonate both with the staff who work with the animals and with our visitors.
