Richmond drivers are being advised to avoid the area of Westminster Highway and No. 3 Road for the rest of today.
The City of Richmond tweeted Thursday morning that FortisBC is carrying out work on Westminster Highway eastbound, between Minoru Boulevard and No. 3 Road until this evening.
For the duration of the work, only a single eastbound lane will be open and there will be no left turns allowed from eastbound lane onto No. 3 Road.
Also the west crosswalk will be closed and the southbound bike lane will be closed.
A spokesperson for FortisBC said crews are making emergency repairs to a damaged natural gas line, which they hope to repair as "quickly as possible."
"...The estimated time on when repairs will be complete is sometime tomorrow. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause commuters and residents in the area."
Fortis wanted to remind everyone people that, if they smell rotten eggs or hear the sound of escaping gas, stop what you’re doing, go outside and dial 9-1-1 or call FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line at 1-800-663-9911.
