The city is expecting the percentage of EV light-duty vehicles in Richmond to exceed five per cent by the end of this year.

So, city staff is recommending council require new commercial and office buildings to have EV charging infrastructure installed in 45 per cent of their parking stalls – a combination of Level 1 and Level 2 chargers.

They also recommend new hotels be required to have this infrastructure installed in 100 per cent of their parking stalls.

City staff estimate it will cost between $400 and $700 per parking stall to install the EV charging infrastructure.

“These costs will be much lower than the cost required to retrofit the same parking space with EV Ready charging capability at a later date,” city staff note in a report going to next week’s committee meeting.

Property owners could determine themselves the rollout of the actual charging stations as well as what to charge users.

The city already requires all new residential buildings to have EV charging infrastructure installed in 100 per cent of parking stalls.

The EV charging item will be dealt with at Monday’s committee meeting.
