Early morning fire in abandoned house in central Richmond

A house built in 1943 on Garden City Road was on fire early Thursday morning.

Richmond Fire-Rescue was called to a house on fire early Thursday morning on Garden City Road.

The fire was in an abandoned house at 4460 Garden City Rd. between Alexandra and Odlin roads.

Fire crews received the call at 6:15 a.m. and arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the house, according to the City of Richmond.

The fire response is affecting traffic on Garden City Road between Odlin Road and Alderbridge Way.

There are several older single-family houses along this stretch of Garden City and the area is largely slated for redevelopment.
