Crown directed a stay of proceedings in Richmond Provincial Court for a man standing trial on drug and weapons charges.
Jasper Catua Arcangel was on trial in late March, facing eight charges in court.
However, on April 17, a stay of proceedings was recorded on all charges.
The file was originally being dealt with by the BC Prosecution Service; in August 2023, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) took conduct of it.
According to the PPSC, Crown determined the standard for prosecution was no longer met and stayed the charges.
A PPSC spokesperson explained Crown has an “obligation to continually assess its cases to ensure they continue to meet the standard for prosecution.”
Arcangel was arrested in May 2023 after his home was raided by Richmond RCMP.
Arcangel also faced charges in Surrey Provincial Court for offences dating back to September 2022.
He was sentenced on July 5, 2024, in Surrey Provincial Court to 469 days in jail for one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and to one day for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
