After a three-year hiatus from civic politics, former Richmond city councillor Cynthia Chen plans to run again as an independent candidate in the upcoming municipal election on Nov. 19.

Chen lost her seat on council after the last civic election in the fall of 2008.

Having lived in Richmond for over 33 years, I have witnessed tremendous growth and the challenges it presents, she said.

I have always believed that community service is about building and strengthening community.

I would like another opportunity to serve the residents of Richmond and bring a new focus and direction to meet the challenges of the future.

Joining her team as campaign and public relations manager is Don Montgomery, long time Richmond resident and recipient of the 2009 BC Community Achievement Award for his work in the arts and culture community.

I am very excited to be part of Cynthias team, he said.

I look forward to helping her succeed in this challenging election campaign. Cynthia cares about our city and all of its residents, young and old, and she has the experience and knowledge to help make our city grow with consideration for its residents.

What has prompted Cynthia to run again is her concern for many important issues, including city spending, transparency and accountability, managing rapid growth while maintaining existing neighbourhoods, helping local businesses and organizations, providing affordable and accessible housing, and encouraging community engagement.

I respectfully ask the residents of Richmond to consider giving me another opportunity to represent them at city hall and to be their voice in determining the citys future direction, she said.

I really do want to encourage our younger voters to get involved in this election, learn about the issues that can affect them in the future, and be part of this important democratic process today.

Chen has re-launched her website and can now be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
