A controversial modular housing project that has ignited a string of debates over the past three months is expected to get a decision next week.
The City of Richmond announced this week that a special council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 in city hall’s council chambers.
The meeting expects to see a final decision made on the proposed 40-unit modular housing for homeless and vulnerable people at 7300 Elmbridge Way.
The public will have an opportunity to speak to council at the meeting before a decision is made on whether to move forward with the project or not, according to Ted Townsend, the city’s spokesperson.
“We do expect there will be a lot of interest, a lot of delegations. So we feel it’s better to have a special council meeting to deal with the issue,” said Townsend.
He added people wishing to speak to council are encouraged to register prior to the meeting outside of the chambers, where a speakers list will be available starting at 6 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis.
The city has held a series of events to seek feedback from the public on the project since it was proposed in February, including a survey, two information meetings, nine community forums and one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders.
Townsend said all public feedback received to date has been sent to council for consideration.
