The City of Richmond is looking to update its ban on rat poison being used on city-owned property.

This will be on the agenda for Monday’s city council meeting, which will take place at 7 p.m.

Council will be assessing the need to further extend the city’s rat poison ban on Richmond city properties until Jan. 31, 2024.

Private properties are not affected by the rat poison ban in Richmond, but a provincial ban on second-generation anti-coagulants applies throughout B.C.

City council will also be looking at the housing agreement for a proposed new condo tower with “affordable” rental housing in City Centre.

A 14-storey condo tower is planned for 8131 Westminster Hwy., close to No. 3 Road, which includes 134 units, where 10 per cent of them could be earmarked as affordable rental units ranging from $811 to $1,480 in rent.

Also on the agenda are items including updating the city’s Child Care Needs Assessment and Strategy as well as finalizing a draft for the 2022-2032 Seniors Strategy.

At last week's planning meeting, Coun. Alexa Loo questioned whether 55 is the appropriate age to define a "senior," pointing out a lot of people this age are still quite active.

As well, city council will be assessing an updated list of proposed road safety improvement projects and will consider a cost-share funding agreement for the program.

If the road safety improvement project and cost-sharing agreement pass, the Consolidated Five Year Financial Plan for 2022-2026 will be amended.
