Cops call for safety

A rash of collisions between cars and pedestrians has led to police calling for everyone to take greater care on or near Richmond's roads.

A rash of collisions between cars and pedestrians has led to police calling for everyone to take greater care on or near Richmond's roads.

Yet another pedestrian was injured - this time not seriously - at the beginning of the rush-hour Thursday morning at the Steveston Highway and No. 1 Road intersection.

The incident happened when it was still dark, around 6: 30 a.m., when the pedestrian tried to use the crosswalk to get across Steveston Highway.

The person was taken to hospital, but is believed to have been released soon after being treated for minor injuries.

That brings the unofficial total to five incidents in just over a month, three of which were fatal and many of which involve elderly people negotiating busy roads away from crosswalks.

Sgt. Cam Kowalski, of Richmond RCMP, said the spike in accidents is very much on the detachment's radar.

"We've had a couple of serious pedestrian incidents recently, but this one was not in that category," Kowalski said.

"I wouldn't call it an alarming increase, but it's certainly an increase that we're cognizant of and we'll be stepping up measures and awareness for the community to take more care on and near the roads.

"I would urge drivers to please be careful and to keep their eyes out all the time for pedestrians. I would also ask pedestrians to be more careful and to wear clothing conducive to the time of day."

Even away from crosswalks, drivers should always be paying attention for pedestrians stepping onto the road, urged Kowalski.
