Convicted pedophile Chris Neil remains in custody and has agreed in principle to restrictions on his actions.
But Judge Patrick Chen has adjourned the hearing after asking whether Neil's conviction in Thailand is covered by the Criminal Code section which allows the court to apply restrictions in order to protect children under the age of 16.
The restrictions, if allowed, include not accessing the internet, no access to areas commonly frequented by children, going to the forensic psychiatric facility for assessment and surrender all travel documents.
It is believed to be the first time that this rarely used section of the criminal law has been used for someone convicted outside the country.
Court is expected to resume at 1:30.
Neil, a 37-year-old former teacher from Maple Ridge, served five years in a Thai jail for sexually abusing two boys, aged nine and 13. He was released from jail and returned to Vancouver last Friday.
Neil was immediately arrested at the airport and has been in custody since then. He is being held under a seldom used section of the Criminal Code, which allows for the detention of people deemed to be likely to sexually assault children under 16.
The government is seeking restrictions on Neil now that he is back in Canada. But new charges against Neil are possible as he originally came to widespread public attention when Interpol issued a plea for information about him in 2007, saying that he was wanted for the sexual abuse of 12 boys - the youngest was six - and for distributing images of those assaults on the internet.
