For the sixth year running, a Vancouver company has pledged to match donations to the Richmond Food Bank.

For the month of December, real estate firm Peterson has promised to match donations to the food bank, up to $10,000.

All you have to do is mention “Peterson” when donating to the food bank this month.

“We are very grateful for this amazing donation matching initiative that doubles the impact of donations for our neighbours in need,” wrote the food bank’s executive director Hajira Hussain on their donation page.

“You can make donations easily and securely online. You can even dedicate your donation in honour of someone special as a memorable holiday gift! Please be sure to write ‘Peterson’ in the “Message for Richmond Food Bank Society” box so we can track the donation.”

The pandemic, added Hussain, has made it harder for Canadians to put food on the table.

In 2020, the food bank saw a 49 per cent increase in the number of new households that accessed the service for the first time.

It serves around 2,300 people in Richmond every month.

“To meet the increased demand we extended our hours of operation for those in need, expanded our delivery program, added express pickup and drive-through options,” wrote Hussain.

“This past September, thanks to the vaccination program, we cautiously reopened our indoor Choice Model, distribution and are adapting constantly to protect our volunteers’ and community members’ health and safety.”

Hussain pointed out that, for every dollar donated, the food bank can give out almost $6 worth of food (based on 2019 data).

“Donations of funds allow us to procure what is needed most, optimizing our storage space and our use of human resources. This gives your donations a bigger and more immediate impact.”
