Community feedback is needed for several potential solutions to improving parking, cycling and pedestrian experiences around Steveston.
The City of Richmond is looking into planning for Chatham, Moncton and Bayview streets in Steveston for the 2023 to 2024 Steveston Streetscape Project.
Public engagement began earlier this year, which led to the development of four potential options. Community members are now asked to comment on the options and voice their opinions on long-term public priorities in the area.
Community members can either have their say by completing an online survey on LetsTalkRichmond.ca by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 30 or attend the drop-in open house at Richmond City Hall room 1.003 from 3 to 7 p.m. on June 26.
Two open houses were previously held on June 9 and 16.
The first option is to stick to the status quo, with the second being to concentrate parking on Chatham Street and adjust lane widths on Moncton Street to increase pedestrian space. Bayview Street would become a shared street to allow "increased accessibility and freedom of pedestrian movement."
A total of 155 free parking spots are currently available across the three streets and option two will add 18 more parking spaces.
The third option aims to improve cycling connectivity on Chatham Street by adding a new bike lane with angled parking. Pedestrian space on Moncton Street would be increased and Bayview Street would get angled parking and improved pedestrian space. Parking would be balanced within Steveston Village. This option will add six more parking spots.
The final option proposes to concentrate parking on Chatham Street by adding angled parking. Moncton Street would be converted to a one-way street to increase pedestrian space, and Bayview Street would get new bike lanes. The fourth option will mark the highest increase in parking spots at 27.
More details about the design concepts can be found on the concept boards. For more information on the streetscape project, click here.
