Already being labeled a green oasis, the Richmond Cultural Centres new rooftop garden will be officially opened today (Friday).

At 5 p.m. the rooftop formerly a homage to concrete, according to the City of Richmond will open to the public.

The previously unused space has been transformed and now incorporates a whole host of sustainable elements including: recycled glass pebbles along the walkways to represent water; pillar cisterns and planter troughs to capture rain water; apple trees and many food plants including blueberries, lavender, spinach, kiwi fruit and bok choy.

The new garden has also been termed the urban cousin of Terra Nova Rural Park.

The new rooftop garden is going to be integral to providing innovative programs ranging from growing food in small spaces to water conservation techniques, Mayor Malcolm Brodie said in a press release.

In an era when food security and sustainability are top of mind, this garden is sure to be a legacy for future generations.

The focal point of the garden is a large, communal table made of reclaimed wood with a centre trough to capture rainwater.

The setting provides a unique outdoor venue for arts programs and events such as summer music series, play readings and film screenings.

In addition to the table, there is even a plan for a night garden to feature a mushroom log.

The rooftop garden opening event is part of Culture Days weekend. In addition, that evening at 7:30 p.m. celebrated playwright, Lucia Frangione will give a reading and talk, and on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. chef Ian Lai will present Cultural Salad, a culinary arts workshop about local food.
