Unions representing inside and outside workers are entering into mediation with the City of Richmond over their collective agreements.

Two unions representing City of Richmond workers will be heading into mediation with the employer to resolve disagreements over contract terms.

The unions "both reached (an) impasse" with the city earlier this week, confirmed Shane Galloway and Dal Benning in a joint statement to the Richmond News.

Galloway is the president of CUPE Local 394 representing outside workers, while Benning serves as the president of CUPE Local 718 representing inside workers.

The previous collective agreements expired on Dec. 31, 2023.

"We’re disappointed that we haven’t been able to negotiate a new contract that improves working conditions for CUPE members and enhances community services for residents and businesses."

They added that the City of Richmond filed for mediation with the BC Labour Relations Board on March 14.

City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams told the News the city is bargaining with the unions for new collective agreements.

"To respect that process, we do not want to comment further at this time but remain committed to achieving a negotiated Collective Agreement that is in the best interests of all involved," he said.
