Some workers at the Richmond Olympic Oval have switched over to another union that represents many employees at the City of Richmond and Richmond Public Library.

CUPE Local 718, also known as the Inside Workers for the City of Richmond, announced the change of membership for 64 operating engineers, building service workers and facility attendants on Friday afternoon.

The workers were previously represented by the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) and the change in union representation was granted after a Labour Relations Board hearing on Jan. 30.

Neither the Richmond Olympic Oval nor PPWC objected to the decision.

The announcement states CUPE 718 will inherit the existing collective agreement between Richmond Olympic Oval and PPWC set to expire Jun. 30 this year.

The union currently represents around 1,750 employees at the City of Richmond, Richmond Public Library, City of White Rock, the Organized Crime Agency of BC and Regional Animal Protection Society.

Dal Benning, CUPE 718 president, said the union looks forward to "building a positive working relationship" with the Oval to maintain "a fair and inclusive work environment" for union members and "strengthens services for patrons."

“Richmond Olympic Oval workers bring a wealth of expertise and dedication to their professions, playing a crucial role in delivering quality services that the community relies on,” Benning added.
