After one prospective medical marijuana company recently went belly up in Richmond, a second company has emerged asking the City of Richmond to rezone a property in east Richmond to facilitate cannabis production.

Numbered company 8572534 Canada Ltd. has support of Richmond city planners to set up shop in a 5,400-square-foot building at 5960 No. 6 Road, near Westminster Highway.

City council’s planning committee has approved the initial application. Committee chair Coun. Linda McPhail said council wants to limit such facilities in the city to just one.

The company must still obtain a Health Canada production license, which is a prerequisite for the special rezoning application.

Earlier this year, medical marijuana start-up company Medijean folded after apparent infighting between investors. In March, Medijean’s production equipment was auctioned off.
