Chinese Lantern Festival debuts tonight in Vancouver

Are you looking for a family-friendly event for this holiday? The Vancouver Chinese Lantern Festival kicks off tonight (Dec. 15) at the PNE.

It is a five-week celebration with massive lanterns, amazing performances and food trucks running until Jan. 21, 2018.

This is the largest lantern festival in Canada and it features 35 spectacular illuminated displays. These lanterns are handmade with silk and symbolize Chinese legends such as Dragon, White Pagoda, Kylin and Panda.

There are two half-hour stage shows each night feature a variety of Chinese artists and entertainers, including acrobats, folk dancers and Chinese musicians. Performances will include plate spinning, contortion, traditional juggling while on a unicycle, jar balancing, face changing performances and more.

Chinese lantern festivals started 2,000 years ago when people celebrate the New Year with their families together. In China, people celebrate this festival on the 15th of the first Chinese lunar month by enjoying lanterns and eating tangyuan (a sweet sesame glutinous ball in soup).
