One traveller was arrested after border agents seized 29 kilograms of methamphetamines at Vancouver International Airport in mid-July.
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers intercepted the gift-wrapped drugs in two suitcases from the traveller who was flying to Hong Kong.
According to the CBSA, this amount of methamphetamines is estimated to be 150,000 individual doses.
The person was transferred to the custody of the RCMP Border Enforcement with the Pacific Region’s Federal Policing unit.
The 25-year-old has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession for the purpose of exporting and exporting a controlled substance.
The charges from the July 18 incident still need to be validated in court. The person, who is a citizen of China, is expected in Richmond Provincial Court on Aug. 6 for a bail hearing.
The investigation is ongoing, CBSA said in a press release.
“This outcome highlights the strength of our partnership with CBSA. Their vigilance and our officers’ swift investigative response led to an individual being arrested and charged with attempting to export illegal drugs,” said David Teboul, Assistant Commissioner, RCMP Federal Policing – Pacific Region.
“This kind of collaboration ensures that transnational crime is met with a united and effective law enforcement approach."
