The City of Richmond looks set to participate in the 2013-2015 Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale.

City councils parks and recreation committee unanimously backed bringing the public art exhibition back to Richmond next year.

Although the decision has still to be ratified by city council, the resolution passed with the condition city staff find corporate sponsorship to fund the $75,000 participation fee recommending the city host three sculptures, each at a cost of $25,000.

I think this is excellent news for Richmond, said Coun. Linda Barnes. Last time, it provided wonderful art and good public dialogue.

City council will also have final approval for each individual sculpture that enters Richmond and its location, power they didnt have for the last Biennale. Last exhibit, the pieces came as a package and were placed wherever there was space.

Although this new stipulation provides council with a little more control over the individual pieces that get passed, Barnes said it wont cause council to play it safe either.

Obviously, we wont be passing anything offensive, said Barnes. But we do want to encourage lively debate and commentary.
