A black bear was seen near McDonald Beach this week, but theres no cause for alarm according to the City of Richmond.

No further action is required at this time as the bear hasnt approached people, nor has it been seen near any homes.

Its most likely that the bear wandered down the Fraser River from Burns Bog or further up the valley. From its appearance and behaviour, the young animal seems to have little interest in people and is just passing through.

The RCMP, Canadian Wildlife Service and the Conservation branch of the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Metro Vancouver Parks and YVR were made aware of this sighting.

Bear Sighting signs were also put up around McDonald Beach.

Areas between mountains, forests and the waters edge provide a perfect habitat for bears, making sightings common in the lower mainland, though not particularly common in Richmond.

Conflict with bears usually occurs when they feel surprised or threatened. People traveling to Sea Island should be aware and, if sighted, should give a bear space. For more information, visit http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/bearsmart/ and .
