Battered, bruised Richmond sales manager skates toward world record

Shes battered, bruised and has already worn well into her second skin on her ankles. But you wont hear Vallerie Skelly complaining.

Shes battered, bruised and has already worn well into her second skin on her ankles.

But you wont hear Vallerie Skelly complaining.

For every inch of ice the Richmond sales manager covers, shes raising dollars for a charity close to her heart and will edge closer to a Guinness world record.

Skelly is the brains behind a mammoth ten-day non-stop hockey marathon, raising money and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

She and 39 fellow women hockey players have been skating on and off since last Friday in four-hour shifts.

They get a four-hour sleep or rest in between each shift, but are not allowed to leave the fenced boundary of the arena in Burnaby.

We have RVs, campers vans and lots of sleeping bags, said Skelly, who is using vacation time from Richmond Ford Lincoln to host and take part in the record attempt.

Were not allowed to leave, but we have a group of dedicated volunteers to get stuff in for us and we have regular massages and physio.

We have lots of aches and pains, but well get through it.

On Monday at 10 a.m., Skelly and the rest of the dedicated players will match the current record for the longest skate set earlier this year in Canada and then will keep playing for another 65 minutes.

The extra minute number was chosen because it represents the renowned 65 Red Roses blog kept by New Westminsters Eva Markvoort, who died from cystic fibrosis at the age of 25 in March 2010.

Skelly first thought of the hockey marathon idea is back in 2009, but when she raised it with fellow teammates, they thought she was crazy.

Then I went to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and they got things going for me, she said.

But it was many years previous that the seed of doing something for cystic fibrosis was sown in Skellys mind.

I worked as a summer student at the foundation and I struck up a friendship with a girl who had cystic fibrosis, she said.

We ended up being inseparable. She passed away aged just 27. But I told her that one day I would make a difference.

And making a difference she is. He goal is to raise $400,000.

I know thats a bit aggressive, but Im hoping that all the media coverage will show people how crazy and great this is.

We go right through to Monday when we will match the record at 10 a.m. and then we will skate for another 65 minutes.
