As both B.C. and Albertan governments continue to dig in their heels over Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline, a new poll shows Canadians are evenly split over which side they are taking.
A public opinion poll conducted by Angus Reid Institute shows that, nationally, 50 per cent of Canadians are in favour of the pipeline while 50 per cent are opposed. In Alberta specifically, 82 per cent support their government’s backing of the pipeline project. In B.C., however, only 58 per cent support their government’s opposition to the pipeline expansion.
Saskatchewan gave Alberta the strongest support with 70 per cent saying they backed Kinder Morgan’s project while B.C. got the most support in Quebec, where 64 per cent were opposed.
When asked which province is giving a more convincing argument? Canadians were also split down the middle.
Moving ahead in the dispute, B.C.’s government said it plans to launch a legal challenge of the boycott on B.C. wine through the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, which went into effect last year.
