A Richmond dancer returned home from a provincial performing arts festival in Victoria this week with a first-place finish.
Theresa van den Boer with the Richmond Academy of Dance won in the senior modern/contemporary dance category at the 2025 Performing Arts BC provincials.
Ten dancers from the academy between the ages of 13 and 18 were selected to perform at the provincials, which ran from June 1 to 5.
Dancers performed in various categories, including classical ballet, modern/contemporary dance, stage dance, classical voice and musical theatre voice.
The academy's Rachel Yu returned home as the runner-up in the junior ballet category, while both Sophie Tang and Valerie Chan were runners-up in the intermediate ballet category.
Caitlin Antolis received an honourable mention in the musical theatre voice category.
"We are thrilled about each artist's participation at this provincial level," said Annette Jakubowski, artistic director of Richmond Academy of Dance.
"It reflects years of serious training, dedication and commitment by each performer as well as exceptional teamwork amongst faculty, choreographers and directors."
Heather Joosten, also an artistic director at the academy, said these youth have been dedicated and have practiced hard to achieve the goal of performing at provincials.
"These artists possess both of these qualities as well as true talent," said Joosten.
