Local urban green thumbs of all ages are invited to participate in upcoming events for the Richmond Urban Food Project, a collaborative project hosted by food blogger and gardener, Michelle Li and Branscombe House artist-in-residence, Rhonda Weppler. Whether they are growing a single bean plant in a coffee cup or tending to a formidable backyard garden of Eden, participants can schedule a free and simple photo-shoot with Michelle and Rhonda to have themselves and their greenery photographed.
Selected photographs will form a slideshow/exhibition for the Richmond Urban Food Project, to be displayed at the Branscombe House, located at 4900 Steveston Highway, from August 14 to 20, 2016. The participating gardeners will be invited to attend the exhibit and a garden party at Branscombe House, where they will enjoy a potluck feast of harvested garden delights. For those looking for a hands-on art-making experience, Michelle and Rhonda will also present Print Versus Print! – two free, self-directed, drop-in printmaking workshops at Branscombe House on Sunday, July 10 and Sunday, August 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with two different printmaking techniques: sun prints (cyanotypes) and acrylic paint monoprints, using natural garden materials such as leaves, flowers and lush greenery. Materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear clothes they will not mind potentially getting paint on.
Richmond Urban Food Project and Print Versus Print! are presented through the Branscombe House Artist Residency program. Branscombe House is located at 4900 Steveston Highway and is one of the earliest homes built in the area. It is significant for its historical connection to Steveston.
