Youth recommend summer reads

Princes, orphans, siblings and villagers populate young imaginations

Title: The Prince and the Pauper

Reviewed by: Angela Man, 10

Tom, a pauper, and Edward, a prince, both dream of a life opposite from their own.

While Tom dreams of living in a castle and Edward dreams of running wild in the streets, the two young boys meet and change lives.

Although Tom is having a luxurious time and Edward is having a wild time, they both realize they were truly made for their original lives.

This book was very unique because it was in archaic form, the types of words that people used in the olden time, which made it difficult to understand. Although this was a barrier, the interesting content forced me to continue.

It taught me to accept life, even if I may envy another person's life. This is important because you could waste your life envying someone else's or use your life wisely and have others envy you.

Title: Welcome to Camden Fall

Reviewed by: Sidrah Umar, 11

This book is about two sisters who lost their parents in a car crash and are now going to live with their grandmother, Min, in Camden Falls.

I like this book because it has characters who have totally different personalities. Flora, the oldest sister, is very shy and loves to sew and make crafts, but Ruby, Flora's younger sister, likes to dance and sing, and likes to be onstage.

Flora and Ruby's friend, Olivia, is very intelligent and has skipped a grade and also has an interest in science.

Title: The Vile Village

Reviewed by: Vanessa Cheung, 10

The three Baudelaire orphans have had nothing but misery in their lives. Now they are going to the Valley of Four Drafts (VFD), where the motto is, "It takes a village to raise a child."

I like this book because it is unlike other books. Instead of talking about happy stuff, it talks about unhappy stuff like the children in jail on Klaus's birthday, to being left on the streets alone.

Also, the book makes you keep reading. I like it when Violet finds a way to escape the jail using water to soften the mortar that keeps the bricks together and then busting the wall free.

I also like it when the citizens of VFD are careless.
