The Richmond News went out on the street to ask the public what improvements they'd like to see in the city in the coming year.

Bily Xiao, Financial Advisor

I’d love to see more community events in Richmond in 2018 that really draw different cultures and connect them all together. I just feel like, in Vancouver and some other cities, there are a lot more people being in the public spaces and doing things together. I didn’t get as much that feel living in Richmond.

Wael Etwishahy, Telecom Engineer

I hope the traffic will be a little bit better. Traffic is kind of pretty bad in the downtown core. It gets too crowded on the roads. I drive and there is always a traffic jam and we are usually stuck on the roads. Maybe less traffic or better management for the traffic around the town.

Michael Gosal, Registered Nurse

I think Richmond needs more affordable housing, especially detached homes, and maybe bigger roads or a better road system, because roads are getting more congested. I’d like to see more townhouses, more detached homes, maybe someone will make it more affordable.

May Ng, Retired

I hope the government will not support marijuana legalization. If that’s inevitable, it should at least raise the minimum age to 21, when people are more mature and their brains are fully developed. I also hope growing cannabis at home will be banned, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

Samantha Morris
Samantha Morris: I would like better home care for the elderly and those with mental health problems. Daisy Xiong photo

Samantha Morris, Care Attendant

I would like better home care. I work with the elderly and we really don’t have enough money to even give our veterans the proper care they need. We are really under staffed and overcrowded in our extended care home. Opening something up for mental health and more funding for the elderly will be nice.tually take care of the elders that are coming in. It’s getting worse that the baby boomers soon to be retiring and they are getting up there, but we have no space for them.
