Moms will be delighted if their loved ones took them to south Richmond this weekend to pick up some flowers at two special, annual sales.

First, on Saturday, the Richmond GoGos group will be selling sunflower seedlings at South Arm United Church at the corner of Steveston Highway and No. 3 Road. Also on sale will be African-designed tote bags.

Proceeds of this charitable sale will go to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which combats the spread of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Richmond GoGos are one of hundreds of GoGo groups around the world that fundraises for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. The African word GoGo means grandmother.

“Grandmothers in Africa have risen above their grief to put their (orphaned) grandchildren through school while leading the way by rebuilding communities and advocating for change in their societies,” said sunflower sale organizer Jean Way.

The sale takes place in the parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 604-272-3732 for more information. Join the GoGos at Facebook.com/Richmond.GoGos.

London Heritage Farm events

After picking up sunflowers, the second flower (and plant) sale takes place further south at London Heritage Farm.

On Saturday and Sunday (Mother’s Day), the farm will be selling featured plants and flowers from its garden. Perennials, annuals, herbs, hanging baskets, tomato seedlings, succulent arrangement and garden accessories will be sold.

There will be a free surprise plant for each child at the checkout; also, a draw for a chance to win a hanging basket.

The farm is located at 6511 Dyke Road. See LondonHeritageFarm.ca for more details.

It should be noted the annual Mother’s Day Tea is sold out of bookings, however there is limited space available for walk-ins. The special tea takes place Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Tea, scones and baked goods are served for $14.
