Steveston is a community well-known for its wharf, seafood and film sets, but one Richmond photographer is more interested in the neighbourhood’s deep history and local characters.
Clare Scott, a Steveston resident, has published a book, Faces of Steveston, featuring 58 biographies and photos of current Steveston residents.
“Being a photographer, I just notice so many characters around in the community who I don’t know,” said Scott, a teacher.
Not only did she want to get to know them, she also wanted to “pursue her photography a bit more” during her free time. The project seemed like a great marriage of the two.
“It’s been a fascinating project so far with all the people I’ve met and all the stories I’ve heard.”
Scott told the Richmond News that the book features residents ranging in age from 14 to 90; some are older Japanese fishermen, others are athletes.
The book, said Scott, is not a history book. Rather, it’s a collection of current “footprints in Steveston.”
The book is now on sale, with proceeds going to the Steveston Historical Society.
“As I took the photos of every person in this book, I learned more about them and I hope I can create more awareness of who is in our community.”
