1. Summer Speakers’ Series: Saturday, June 10 and ongoing:

In commemoration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is presenting The Pull of the Net: Speakers’ Series, a free summer program to celebrate the importance of fishing to Richmond’s past, present, and future.

The series begins on June 10 at 2 p.m. with a focus on Aboriginal connections to the Fraser River, featuring a presentation by Stó:loōcultural historian Dr. Sonny McHalsie and a screening of a short film that shares Stó:loōand Musqueam oral histories of how salmon came to the Fraser River.

Presented from four unique perspectives, topics will explore fishing’s cultural and economic importance, bridging past and present to create a greater understanding of Richmond’s human history and the community’s strong ties to fishing. All presentations will take place inside the Boiler House Theatre at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site (12138 Fourth Ave.).

2. Classic car show featuring EVs: Sunday, June 11:

If you get “charged” up about seeing some fabulous cars, you’ll get a double jolt Sunday as the annual Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine at the Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street) will feature a display of the latest electric vehicles. The Electric Vehicle Showcase runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Plug-in Richmond is sponsoring the event which will include a solar model car racetrack. Details online at PlugInRichmond.ca.

3. Bike tour: Sunday, June 11:

Saddle up and get rolling at the 17th Annual City, by Bike Tour on June 11 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30p.m. It is a free, family-oriented guided ride from the West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Road) that will explore some of Richmond’s on- and off-street bike routes. Bike check at 9:30 a.m. The long ride (18 km) leaves at 10 a.m., while the short ride (9 km) leaves at 11 a.m.
