Seniors doin' very well

Senior citizens may have a reputation of enjoying the quiet life and not being the most active people, but that could not have been farther from the truth during Wednesday's Wellness Fair.

Senior citizens may have a reputation of enjoying the quiet life and not being the most active people, but that could not have been farther from the truth during Wednesday's Wellness Fair.

The Minoru Place Activity Centre was all hustle and bustle as it was host to Activate! Wellness Fair 55+, a free event meant to encourage an active and well-balanced lifestyle for seniors.

It started at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning and lasted until 6 p.m. with a variety of events held throughout the day.

There were workshops on balcony pot gardening, breathing and relaxation, nutritional healing, pain management as well as a Zumba dance class to end the day.

There was even a roaming group of drummers who made their way around the fair, stopping at various locations to incite a little extra excitement, and even some dancing, to the proceedings.

"I think it's very important for mental stimulation, physical stimulation, just to keep going," said Marie Belway, a resident and former entertainment director of Minoru Place.

"I'm a great grandmother, I have a special needs great grandchild and so I am active with my grandchildren, my great grandchildren and the Minoru Senior Centre."

The highlight for many was special guest speaker Arthur Black's comical and critical romp.

Black is a successful humourist and author of more than 10 books as well as the former host of the CBC Radio program Basic Black.

He had the crowd laughing out loud on numerous occasions as he reminisced about the "good old days" and commented on everything from cell-phone sizes to George Burns.

The fair is in its 12th year and focuses on information and services for older adults aged 55 and over. Every year it helps promote health, wellness, safety and independence.
