Normally, one wouldn’t hold out much hope for a team called “The Bozos” winning anything of note.

However, the Richmond Secondary team of students competing in the Game of Apps has belied their name by winning the Richmond Regional Championships and earning a second place in the BC Provincial Championships.

Game of Apps is an app design and development program targeting high school students and, over the past few months, The Bozos have been working and learning closely with mentors in the industry to create an app called PureScan.

Their app was inspired by a video they watched online about unethical mining of a mineral called mica in India, where children are forced to work in very dangerous conditions.

The app has a scanner that scans a food or cosmetic product and tells you what high-risk ingredients or unethically sourced ingredients are in it.

Then, it shows you products that are healthier and ethically sourced.

“Our approach to making a change is that by taking small meaningful steps in our daily lives, we have the power to change and influence problems on a global scale,” said one of The Bozos, Anna Luo, in an email to the Richmond News.

As well as Luo, the team consists of Ayman Elheneidy, Ben Qiu, Bonnie Qiu, Gabriel Dela Rosa, Harry Peng, Minnie Lo and Zena Lang.
