A Richmondite is encouraging people to put on running shoes to get ready for an upcoming virtual running challenge.
This Sunday was supposed to be the culmination for thousands of people who have spent months training for the annual BMO Vancouver Marathon, including Richmond resident Frank Wu.
However, many participants felt their hearts sink following the latest announcement from the organizer - the race was cancelled due to the growing concerns of the pandemic.
While many people start putting their running shoes back in the wardrobes, Wu decided to extend the journey further by launching a virtual race on May 3.
“My friends told me they have been dreaming of crossing the finish line. It’s okay to feel disappointed that the COVID-19 put many running contests on hold. Although the race might be up in the air, that doesn’t mean we can’t run,” said Wu.
On May 3, participants of the virtual race are encouraged to complete a race of 5km to 8km within their own schedule. They are free to choose any location they want. And the cost is free.
“Even for people who never put on any race before and just want to participate for fun, they are all welcome. We might be running alone, but we won’t feel lonely - we are all part of the larger virtual running group,” said Wu.
As a big sports lover, Wu misses baseball, the NBA and any sports talk radio during the self-isolation period. But he found his mood lifted up through doing exercise, and the happiness can linger for a while.
“I still keep running when the sun is out during this self-isolation period. And I always keep social distancing in mind while I am running. The daily run could clear my mind and give me a break from bad news about the COVID-19,” said Wu.
Wu also encourages people to post a photo on social media platforms, complete with hashtags Strong BC or Strong Canada, once they finish the running challenge.
“The virtual run also aims to bring us together as a community. We are going to carry the excitement, happiness and pride with us for the virtual race.”
