A Palmer secondary student has picked up second prize in a national French-speaking video contest.

Grade 12 student Kyle Palacios recently participated in the Concours Virtuel competition, which was hosted by Canadian Parents for French, a national network promoting French as a second language and Conseil Jeunesse Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, representing French-speaking youth in B.C.

The contest was originally a long-running public speaking competition called Concours d’art oratoire, but the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately cancelled it to ensure social distancing measures.

The contest asked for participants to make a video in French, discussing how the pandemic has affected them and what they currently do while quarantining and social distancing.

Kyle entered myself in the Grade 11-12 Core French category (which is for students who have only studied French in the regular curriculum) and won second place.

He won $200 for his Ensemble À Distance video and Canadian Parents for French B.C. and Yukon matched it with a $200 charitable donation for his chosen charity, Doctors Without Borders.

“I am extremely proud of my achievement, since I have not been to a Francophone country nor have been in French immersion,” Kyle told the Richmond News via email.
