He might not catch any criminals this year, but Martin Hauck is hopeful of hooking a few more runners this time around.
Richmond resident Hauck is once again taking on the grueling David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge, along with his friend, Jeff Kirkeby, to raise money for cancer research.
During last year’s event – which involves having to run four miles, every four hours, for 48 hours – the pair managed to foil a thief in south Richmond, who was trying to doors of vehicles in the early hours.
This year, however, they will be sticking to the dyke trail for their run and they’re inviting local businesses and members of the community to join them for one of the four-mile legs, starting Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. through to Sunday, March 6.
“This year we decided to include the community a bit more and we’ve reached out to businesses,” Hauck told the Richmond News.
“We’re signing them up for a leg of the run and we will wear their businesses’ t-shirt for that leg as well.
“We’ve got eight business signed up for a leg right now; the hardest will be getting people to run the 4 a.m. leg. Everyone wants to run at noon on a Saturday.”
Inviting the Richmond community
To ease people’s minds, Hauck said they will absolutely run at the pace of whoever they are running with, adding that they won’t be “winning any speed awards.”
He said they will have headlights on for the legs along the dyke trail that will be run in the dark.
“We may need to fight off the coyotes,” Hauck joked, adding that they don’t anticipate seeing too many would-be criminals on the trail.
Not trained
One little stumbling block for Hauck is the tiny detail that he has barely burst into a jog since the summer.
“It could be interesting. I’m not ready,” laughed Hauck who, however, does bike 30 to 40 kilometres a day to and from work.
“When I get home I’m tired; I’ve my little kid that I hang out with playing. I just haven’t had the time to do it.
“Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to try and get in at least a couple of kilometres every day and increase that a little. To be honest, I’m more scared this year than I was last year.”
