Next week is National Police Week and in celebration, Richmond RCMP are connecting with the community and supporting seniors in the city.

On May 16, Mounties will partner with Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives to volunteer with a seniors’ shopping program. Officers will help seniors shop for their groceries at PriceSmart, while others will fill orders placed through RCRG’s phone program that allows seniors to call their orders in.

“Our shopping program is designed to keep seniors healthy and independent,” said Carol Dickson, manager of RCRG’s seniors community support Services in a press release. “For clients who can come to the supermarket, the program provides socialization, as they interact with our volunteers. Just as important, with Shop-By-Phone, homebound seniors get access to fresh groceries.”

RCRG also supports seniors by helping with transportation, visits and light housekeeping.

“We truly appreciate the RCMP’s help,” said Dickson. “We can definitely use the extra hands. But they’re also helping by raising awareness. Hopefully, their example will encourage others to volunteer.”
