The Richmond Food Bank is asking the community to consider making a donation on Giving Tuesday to help them keep bringing food to Richmond residents’ tables as demands grow.

The Richmond Food Bank is asking the community to consider making a donation on Giving Tuesday to help them keep bringing food to Richmond residents’ tables as demands grow.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving and unity and this year, it is taking place on May 5 as an emergency response to COVID-19.

Hajira Hussain, executive director of the Richmond Food Bank said it is a very challenging time for many people and with campaigns like Giving Tuesday, they help charities maintain services for people they serve.

“It’s a great way to bring the community together for a meaningful purpose,” said Hussain.

She told the Richmond News that they have seen a 10 per cent increase of new clients every week since March and has adapted new hours and safety guidelines to accommodate the demand.

“A lot of charities are also facing the crunch right now and … for the Richmond Food Bank, Giving Tuesday will mean that it will ensure continuity in the funding source so we can continue to serve people who come to us for help.

“It’s been a busy time for us, because people who used to come into the building, but now we’re serving at the door. During this time, it would be great for those in a position to give funds to consider making a donation to the food bank.

“(We) want people to be able to access food assistance when they need us and for them to know that we as a community are here to help.”
