Richmond fire-rescue pumpkin drop a smashing success

More than 1,500 pumpkins were dropped for a good cause.

The Annual Pumpkin Drop at Steveston's Fire Hall last week ended with a smashing success.

To mark the end of the spooky season, Richmondites gathered over the weekend on Nov. 5 and 6 to drop pumpkins off the hose tower — all for a good cause.

This year's event was "really well attended," said Jim Dickson, spokesperson for Richmond Firefighters Charitable Society (RFCS). The event raised a total of $7,300 in support of local charities and causes.

"Everyone was composting (their) pumpkins anyway. So to be able to get to drop it from a hose tower, it's a pretty fun thing," said Dickson.

And volunteers in charge of shovelling the pumpkins into the bin got a good workout as well, as RFCS estimates show more than 1,500 pumpkins were dropped over two days.

RFCS has been supporting a total of 11 charities in recent times, including Richmond Food Bank, Richmond Centre for Disability, CHIMO Crisis Centre, Richmond Stroke Recovery and Richmond Women's Resource Centre.
