High school students have until March 12 to apply for a Richmond Community Foundation scholarship.

Last year, the foundation awarded 25 scholarships, together valued at $25,500. The funding supported students in a variety of post-secondary fields, from academics to fine arts to vocational studies.

“Our aim is to help Richmond students achieve their educational goals,” said Dave Frank, chair of the Community Foundation.

“We recognize that, today, students have countless post-secondary options to choose from, and we encourage them to follow their passion. We’ll be there to provide financial assistance.”

This year, for the first time, the foundation will be awarding the Walter Wu Scholarship, named after the three-time Paralympic swimmer, who was born and raised in Richmond.

The scholarship will go to a high-performing student athlete, who requires financial support so they can pursue both their educational and athletic goals.

“We’re so excited to be able to offer this scholarship,” said Julie Halfnights, chair of the foundation’s grants and scholarships committee.

“We’d like to express our sincere gratitude to the Santos Wu family for establishing the fund. It will help ensure that student athletes don’t have to choose between their education and love of sport.”

Also available this year is the Phyllis Taylor Scholarship, for students of British, Scottish, or Irish descent who are involved in the musical or performing arts.

Up to two scholarships will be awarded, valued at $5,000 each. Visit the foundation’s website for information on the application process and deadline, which differ from other high school scholarships.

“Phyllis was a remarkable woman, talented musician, and gifted teacher,” added Frank.

“This scholarship – the foundation’s largest – is a wonderful way to honour her legacy.”

Applications can be completed online at RCRG.org/Foundation.
