Richmondites are invited to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the 1989 Montreal Massacre with a candlelight vigil next week.
On the morning of Dec. 6, the Richmond chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women will hold a vigil to remember and honour the 14 engineering students, all women, who were murdered in a mass shooting at École Polytechnique.
The anniversary of the massacre was also designated as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and the organizers hope the vigil will serve as a renewal of the collective commitment to the cause.
Community members are asked to bring their own candles and arrive at the Richmond Caring Place Atrium at 7000 Minoru Boulevard at 10:45 a.m.
The ceremony will start off with an Indigenous acknowledgment at 11 a.m., followed by the lighting of candles, recitation of the names of the 14 victims and the reading of a poem of commemoration.
The vigil is held in recognition of the following women:
- Geneviève Bergeron
- Hélène Colgan
- Nathalie Croteau
- Barbara Daigneault
- Anne-Marie Edward
- Maud Haviernick

- Maryse Laganière
