Richmond's autism community is coming together to host a free cars and coffee event this weekend.
Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN) is hosting an inclusive, all-ages community event to bring people together around a shared love of cars while supporting meaningful inclusion on June 1 at PAFN's Autism Hub.
The event was inspired by a local couple, Maryn and Jon Wallace, whose son Theo, has a special interest in cars and attends many car and coffee events throughout the year.
Maryn said before Theo could speak, it was clear that he was obsessed with cars.
"Whether pulling us toward a parked vehicle that caught his eye or pointing out details we would’ve otherwise missed, he was always noticing, always communicating in his own way,” she said.
At age four, Theo would learn the make, model and year of cars he saw and would share the details "enthusiastically," particularly with his dad.
Both Maryn and Jon realized cars were not just an interest, but Theo's way to express, connect and share his joy with others.
“It’s like cars gave us a shared language,” said Jon.
“I’ve always been into them, but now it’s different. Now it’s about connection, about understanding how his mind works and what brings him joy.”
This event is more than just a car meet, explained PAFN in a media statement.
"It's an opportunity to build community and create safe, welcoming spaces where autistic individuals and their families feel seen and valued."
Visitors can enjoy coffee and treats from Paper Planes Cafe, a PAFN cafe that hires and trains neurodiverse community members to give them meaningful paid employment.
The event will take place at 3688 Cessna Dr. from 10 a.m. to noon on June 1.
Car enthusiasts who want to showcase their cars at the event can do so by sending their contact and car information to [email protected].
