Readers' Choice Awards: Meet your neighbours

Welcome to this edition of the News’ Readers’ Choice Awards, where we celebrate the businesses, community groups andndividuals who make Richmond the dynamic and prosperous city it is.

Welcome to this edition of the News’Readers’ Choice Awards, where we celebrate the businesses, community groups andndividuals who make Richmond the dynamic and prosperous city it is.

Every year we ask our readers to vote on what businesses they think go over and above to be the best in their class — be it serving food, fixing cars or cutting hair.

Congratulations to all those who got the nod. It is, indeed, an honour to be recognized by the people you serve.

But while business owners and managers are a big part of what makes this city tick, so, too, are the everyday people who go about their lives, throwing a little more into the pot than they take out.

To that end, the Richmond News’editorial team set out to find those folks who wouldn’t otherwise make the news but, in fact, are the backbone of this city, bringing us theatre, a cleaner environment or greater safety on the Fraser River. They are individuals who act on their beliefs and remain committed to making our city, a healthy, compassionate and safe place.

The struggle has not been finding these people, but finding space to tell all their stories. Richmond is rich with folks with a community spirit and determination to help build the kind of world they want for themselves and their children.

Throughout the rest of the paper, you will meet some of these neighbours and read about their journey and their cause.

We aren’t counting votes or giving awards, but in the spirit of Readers’ Choice, where we celebrate the best of Richmond, we simply want to recognize a few of our unsung heroes.
