A local man is being honoured at the annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's taking place in Richmond this weekend.

George Tweedlie is being recognized for his contribution to the community and his commitment to helping people affected by dementia.

When his wife, Joan, was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in 2012, it didn't change the way George thought about their relationship.

“I hope my family sees our marriage as a guideline to happiness,” said George.

“Our lives have been filled with luck and love.”

After two years of his wife's diagnosis, he noticed things "were becoming more and more difficult."

He found help in one of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s support groups for caregivers to work through the challenges.

“Some of the topics make me look a little deeper into the way I feel,” he said.

“Before, I wouldn’t have considered myself a caring, compassionate person, but I think this journey has changed me.”

The Richmond Walk is one of 19 walks across municipalities in B.C with registration starting at 9 a.m. followed by the three-kilometre walk at 10 a.m. at Hugh McRoberts secondary and South Arm Park.

The walk is for communities to support British Columbians living with dementia and the people who care for them.

Funds raised through the walk help the society deliver vital programs, services and research on the disease.
