Gala raised $350,000 for hospital

The 14th Annual Richmond Hospital Foundation Starlight Gala raised more than $350,000 for health care programs and patient care at Richmond Hospital and other health care services in the community.

The 14th Annual Richmond Hospital Foundation Starlight Gala raised more than $350,000 for health care programs and patient care at Richmond Hospital and other health care services in the community.

"Our numbers speak volumes to the importance that people feel for their local health services," said Richmond Hospital Foundation president and CEO Natalie Meixner. "With a 25 per cent increase in net revenues over last year's event, we'll be able to do that much more to change the lives of patients in Richmond."

The gala was held on Oct. 13 at the River Rock Casino Resort and Show Theatre, which included a tribute to Richmond's health care professionals and a performance by The Canadian Tenors for more than 450 guests.

In the days following the event, the Tenors visited Richmond Hospital and talked with local patients.

Stroke patient Akber Dhanjee's story about his recover sparked gala guests to donate to Richmond's rehabilitation facilities, including assessment and diagnosis tools and gym and mobility equipment to help gain patients' independence.

"Studies show that the more quickly stroke patients can undergo rehabilitation after their stroke, the more likely they are to recover faster and have better outcomes," said Dr. Jonathan Fenton, Richmond Hospital's senior medical doctor.
