Fiften free or low-cost activities are being offered in Richmond during Youth Week from Thursday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 7.
Youth ages 13 to 24 years are invited to compete in a basketball showcase at South Arm Community Centre, learn about potential career paths in media arts at the Richmond Media Lab and grill and chill at West Richmond Community Centre’s barbecue.
Highlights of Youth Week in Richmond
Sports tournaments: Friday, May 2, various times
Sign up for a team dodgeball tournament at West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Rd.), an annual Youth Week volleyball tournament at Thompson Community Centre (5151 Granville Ave.) or the basketball showcase at South Arm Community Centre (8880 Williams Rd.).
Careers in media arts: Saturday, May 3, noon-4 p.m.
Drop in to the Richmond Cultural Centre Annex (7660 Minoru Gate) and hear panelists share their respective careers and background, and how they made their way to their current positions as media arts professionals.
Grill and Chill BBQ: Monday, May 5, 4-6 p.m.
A free barbecue will be held at West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Rd.) with lawn games, bracelet making, live music, climate change-themed activity stations, hanging with friends and more—all with chances to win prizes.
Totally Teens: Tuesday, May 6, 3-5 p.m.
Join in this afternoon filled with games, activities and delicious food at Cambie Community Centre (12800 Cambie Rd.). Activities include decorating a take-home tote bag, Nintendo Switch gaming tournament, playing giant life-sized games, spike ball, a photo booth station and the new-to-you clothing section.
Paws and Boba: Wednesday, May 7, 4:30-6 p.m.
Be part of this relaxing afternoon at Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton St.) and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of spending time with friendly dogs while sipping on bubble tea. Hosted by Steveston’s Youth Leadership Council.
Youth Week is an annual celebration, which aims to highlight the strong connections between youth and their communities, according to the City of Richmond.
Youth Week events celebrate the energy and contributions of youth to the well-being and development of the community while encouraging a greater understanding and acceptance of youth.
