One of the largest and most complex construction projects in B.C. continues along Gilbert Road in Richmond.
The work is part of the new Gilbert Road Sewer Project between Blundell Road and Steveston Highway. Impacted intersections and areas vary from day to day depending on what the crew is working on.
The upgrades are essential because of the population growth in our city and the age and size of the existing sewer pipes.
The existing sewer is operating at full capacity.
This sewer moves most of Richmond’s sanitary sewage to the Lulu Island Treatment Plant.
The current impact of the construction includes lane closures and other traffic restrictions, sidewalk and parking restrictions, crews using street parking in the neighbourhoods and noise, dust and vibrations.
Drivers using Gilbert Road will need to move carefully through construction zones. The key to successfully navigating construction is to drive slowly and watch for the guidance of the traffic control persons and the traffic cones.
The current construction at the intersection of Francis and Gilbert roads is expected to last about three months and is the final construction work at this location related to the project.
In the future, crews will return to the area to finish the restoration work.
When finished, the new sewer line will be easier for maintenance, provide increased capacity and accommodate future population growth.
