Members of Gilmore Park United Church (pictured) took to the streets last Sunday to partake in some old-fashioned Christmas carolling.

Rev. Maggie Watts-Hammond told the Richmond News a handful of church leaders, dedicated vocalists and acoustic guitar players circled around Richmond to visit seniors and other church members who are shut-ins.

“We just love to sing, so we get out there one Sunday every year,” to visit those who would most appreciate the songs, said Watts-Hammond. Carolling isn’t something you hear much of these days, said Watts-Hammond, adding it brings her back to “that time when we were more of a community; when people went to their neighbours and visited that way.”

Many of the songs were of the old, classic biblical variety, she said.

“It’s a way of reclaiming the carols from the commercialism — to reclaim them for the way they were,” she said.

Gilmore Church (8060 No. 1 Rd.) will hold a Christmas service on Christmas Eve at 7 p.m. followed by communion.
