Solo cyclists or families looking to explore Richmond on bikes can do so this weekend at the city's annual free guided bike tour.

Richmond's 23rd annual Island City By Bike tour, hosted by the City of Richmond and the Richmond Active Transportation Committee, is taking place on Sunday, June 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

While the event is free, cyclists of all ages are required to register for one of two guided routes, both starting and ending at South Arm Community Park, 8680 Williams Rd.

The 25-kilometre on- and off-street biking event will start at 9:30 a.m. and will follow the Garden City Road multi-use path, Granville Avenue protected bike lanes, Minoru Boulevard bike path, Lansdowne Road multi-use path, Burkeville neighbourhood connector, Railway Greenway, No. 2 Road multi-use pathway and the Steveston Highway multi-use pathway.

For those who prefer a shorter route, a scenic 10-kilometre ride will start at 11 a.m. and consists of on- and off-street biking along Williams and Shell roads, Steveston Highway and the No. 2 Road pathway.

A pre-ride bike and helmet safety check will be offered to participants before the tours at 9 and 10:45 a.m., respectively.

Richmond RCMP will also be on site to talk about bike registration as part of their anti-theft initiative.

After the tours, at around 12:30 p.m., participants are invited to enjoy a barbecue, refreshments and raffle prize draws at South Arm Community Park.

Bike tour participants arriving by vehicle are asked to park in the northwest parking lot of South Arm Community Centre.

Registration can be done by visiting richmond.ca/register, calling the city's Registration Call Centre at 604-276-4300 (press 2 at the prompt) from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or at any community centre during business hours.
