The annual BC Summer Reading Club (BC SRC) will be going online with the help from the provincial government.

BC SRC, a free literacy program for children ages five to 14, received a $65,000 through the BC Library Association as part of an investment from the Government of British.

The funding was used to improve the program’s website and online participation programs for young readers and families to easily access throughout the summer and during COVID-19.

“Fun and engaging programs like the BC Summer Reading Club that help our kids strengthen their literacy skills and stay motivated to keep reading over the summer are even more important this year,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education.

“I’m so pleased this incredibly popular program will continue this summer with expanded online features thanks to the great work done by library staff and the BC Library Association.”

New online features to the program include:

  • Digital badges for reaching reading goals and a certificate for finishing the program
  • Live events and video demonstrations including crafts and experiments
  • Weekly stay-at-home activity packages
  • A parent and guardian dashboard to track their kids’ reading progress

This year, the reading club program will be celebrating the theme “Explore Our Universe” while featuring illustrations by B.C. artist Bambi Edlund.

Online registration for local library reading clubs starts on June 15.
