Fire at Richmond's Yaohan Centre shuts down stores, restaurant

More than three shops have been impacted by the fire and water damage

A fire incident inside Richmond's Yaohan Centre on New Year's Day caused multiple businesses to close their doors temporarily.

Datang B.B.Q. Express in the food court, Fukui Gift Shop on the second floor and a few other stores were impacted by the incident.

"The fire incident took place at an antique shop on the second floor of the mall at around 5 a.m. on Jan. 1," Walring Wong, Yaohan Centre's administration manager, told the Richmond News.

"The fire then triggered the sprinkler system which caused water damage to eight units in the mall and part of of our sitting area of the food court, so we have cordoned off the area."

She added firefighters later arrived at the scene and are still investigating the cause of the fire.

"We are waiting for the fire incident report from the fire department and will then look into restoration plans."

While most of the impacted units are on the second floor, Datang B.B.Q. Express in the food court was also impacted by the water leakage from the second floor, according to Wong.

Datang, a roasted meat restaurant, has been a staple in Yaohan's food court for more than a decade.

It was shut down by Vancouver Coastal Health on Jan. 1 "as a result of heat/smoke/water damage sustained by fire and/or flood," according to a notice posted at the stall.
