Different ads for different groups but pot message consistent for Conservatives

Local Chinese radio and newspaper ads from the Conservative Party of Canada made national headlines this week for drawing lines between ethnic and mainstream, English media.

The graphic ads, which state Liberal Party of Canada leader Justin Trudeau supports brothels, drug-injection sites and putting marijuana in the possession of children, were submitted to Chinese publications, but not English ones.

“They hope to scare people off in order to continue to vote for Conservatives,” stated Wallace Chan, a host on Fairchild Radio, to CBC News.

However, while the ads appear to be targeted at certain cultural groups, the Conservative’s stance on marijuana and their interpretations of Trudeau’s position on marijuana legalization and harm-reduction has been stated to both ethnic and English-speaking media, such as the Richmond News.

Conservative MP Dr. Kellie Leitch helped open Steveston-Richmond East Conservative candidate Kenny Chiu’s campaign office in late August.

“Justin (Trudeau) would like to make this available at your local grocery store, like buying a chocolate bar for a child,” said Leitch at the time.

The Liberals contend they want to legalize and regulate marijuana and their platform does not indicate it would be sold in grocery stores.
